A National Call to Crafting

Ways to Donate

Call to Crafting is a network of "DIY"-ers who craft, bake, sew, and create all over the United States. We plan events of any size: COVID19 birthday parties for all ages, bridal showers, weddings, and theme parties. No event is too small or silly.

In addition to planning, we also provide a la cart crafting for any event we plan for you or that you plan for yourself. We craft goody bags, Halloween costumes, cakes/french macaroons/cupcakes for events, bridal shower/wedding/birthday decorations, and everything you need to make all your party Pinterest dreams come true. We take the Y out of DIY and can make whatever you can think of.

Call to Crafting was founded in March 2020 by Hillary Cohen, in response to the nation's request for 100 million home-sewn face masks- a national "call to crafting". A life-long sewer and wanting to help those in need, she dumped out her scrap bin of fabric and began sewing. In an effort to challenge herself to make as many masks as she could in 1 day, she started the 12-hour sew-a-thon.

Over the course of the next two months, Hillary hosted 4 12-hour online sew-a-thons on Instagram, Facebook, and Zoom. Viewership totaled over 150,000 across all 4 events, with sewers participating in all 50 states and several counties across the globe.

Guests included Torian Bellisario, Daniela Ruah, Isaac Mizrahi, Eric Christian Olsen, Patrick Adams, Sean Murray, Annie Potts, Renee Felice, Smith, Paul Adelstein, Barrett Foa, Project Runway contestants Daniel Vosovic & Justin LeBlanc, and musician Chris Mann.

Hillary personally sewed 434 masks across the 4 events, donating to Cedars Sinai Hospital, The City of Hope, The California National Guard, and underprivileged children in Los Angeles.

Call to Crafting also hosted bi-weekly online sew-cial hour events, connecting sewers across the US weekly as well as twice-daily yoga to help ease sewing pains for mask makers globally. The sewing squad together have donated well over 5000 masks to date & continue to donate weekly. Hillary's personal sewn mask count is a little under 2500. Our Patterns

Many people have been asking for a tutorial video...this youtube video is the one our team followed. It is very short and takes you step by step through the process.

Things our team adapted:

  1. Interfacing is not available- our team did not use it.

  2. Our team never sewed the bottom of our masks closed. Instead, that hole can be used to add your own filter- (to help sub for the missing interfacing and to provide more protection; can use coffee filter vacuum cleaner bags, air purifier filters, etc as a homemade filter)

The picture below shows a mask with a hole in the bottom, you will see for final stitch around mask that it stops at either side with a backstitch.
